Bush to Repeal Offshore Drilling Restrictions
'"If we were to drill today, realistically speaking, we should not expect a barrel of oil coming out of this new resource for three years, maybe even five years, so let's not kid ourselves," said Fadel Gheit, oil and gas analyst with Oppenheimer & Co. Equity Capital Markets Division.' [CNN.com]
But how expensive is foreign oil going to be in three to five years?
Considering that drilling for off-shore would be profitable for American companies if the cost of oil reached $60 a barrel and considering that foreign oil has reached $145 a barrel, there's really no reason we shouldn't be drilling.
"In his statement last month, Bush also renewed his demand that Congress allow drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, clear the way for more refineries and encourage efforts to recover oil from shale in areas such as the Green River Basin of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming." [CNN.com]
Finally, Bush is growing a spine and doing something for our country!
I am, of course, concerned for the wildlife of the areas, but, not meaning to sound shallow, but the death of a few polar bears and a handful of whales is nothing compared to the possible human deaths that could be created by continued reliance on foreign oil. We're relying on the same people that cheered during the fires of September 11th, the same people who've been sending terrorists to our shores for more then a decade.
"Democrats say energy companies already have plenty of space to look for oil and have stalled on investing in more oil production while reaping record profits." [FoxNews.com] Also not true. The government, despite its push for alternative energy sources, has yet to fund any alternative energy companies. The "big evil oil companies" are getting about four to five cents a gallon, while the government takes about sixteen to twenty-five cents per gallon, for doing nothing.
In an interview with Hillary Clinton in April, televised on CNN, Clinton was asked by an audience member about the rising prices of energy. Clinton, in a typical Clinton fashion, demanded that the government start a "committee to study the rising cost of fuel." So the government wants to spend even more money, so a group of liberal scientists can tell us what? That we need to find alternative energy sources? That we need to drill offshore? That we need to stop driving cars and live in apartments attached to our work's buildings and never use our cars again? We all need to buy bikes and scooters?
You don't need to pay a committee, Mrs. Clinton; you don't have to spend three million dollars to gather a couple of researchers. You need to repeal the offshore drilling laws in congress, and allow the American people to support themselves with the oil that is necessary to run our country. You need to fund those college kids who have been creating their own gas in their basement out of wine and McDonald's frying oil so they can make a business of it. You need to lessen the taxes a little on the oil until we can get ourselves self-sufficient, and start paying reasonable prices for a gallon of gasoline.
